Discussion Guide / Questions About Many Gods And One God

7.7 If all deities are expressions of one divine reality, what prevents that idea from absorbing every religious claim, even claims that contradict Hinduism?

Typical Answer 1

A Hindu might say the one divine reality is vast enough to include many expressions, even if human descriptions conflict. The contradictions belong to limited human understanding, not to the divine itself.

Gentle Christian Response

That view is generous, but it can become so broad that it cannot be corrected. If every claim is absorbed into one higher reality, then even claims that deny the framework can be reinterpreted as part of it. Christianity, for example, does not claim Jesus is one expression among many. It claims that in Christ God has acted uniquely and decisively (John 1:14; Hebrews 1:1-3).

If a system automatically absorbs even the claims that contradict it, it may become unfalsifiable. It may sound open, but it may not allow other religions to speak on their own terms. Respectful dialogue should let Christianity say what it actually says: Jesus is Lord, not merely one symbolic form. How would your view avoid reinterpreting another faith in a way that its own followers would reject?

Typical Answer 2

A Hindu might say Hinduism has always been inclusive and adaptable. It can honor truths in other religions without needing to reject them.

Gentle Christian Response

Inclusiveness can be a virtue when it means listening, learning, and avoiding contempt. Christians should be glad to recognize truth, beauty, and moral insight wherever they appear. James 1:17 says every good gift comes from above. But inclusion becomes a problem if it changes another religion's central claims in order to fit them into one's own framework.

The Christian claim about Jesus is not easily included as one partial truth among many. Acts 4:12 says there is salvation in no one else. That is not a claim Christians can surrender while still being faithful to the New Testament. The question is not whether Hindus can honor Jesus, but whether Jesus can be honored while his exclusive claims are redefined. Is it truly inclusive to accept Jesus only after changing what he claimed about himself?

Typical Answer 3

A Hindu might say contradictory religious claims are suited to different levels of spiritual maturity. Some teachings are for beginners, others for advanced seekers, and all can serve the journey.

Gentle Christian Response

There is wisdom in recognizing that people grow and that teachers may speak differently to different audiences. Jesus himself teaches with milk for some and deeper things for others, and Hebrews 5:12-14 speaks about maturity. But Christianity does not treat the core gospel as a lower-level teaching to be transcended. Christ crucified and risen remains central from beginning to end.

Paul says he resolved to know nothing among the Corinthians except Jesus Christ and him crucified (1 Corinthians 2:2). That was not a beginner's illusion but the heart of God's wisdom. If Jesus' death and resurrection are the center of God's revelation, they cannot be absorbed as merely one stage among many. Could some truths be simple enough for beginners and still ultimate enough never to be outgrown?
