Discussion Guide / Questions About Ultimate Reality
14.7 If Brahman is beyond all categories, how can we confidently say anything true about Brahman?
Typical Answer 1
A Hindu might say we can speak negatively, saying what Brahman is not. Human language cannot define Brahman directly, but it can point beyond itself.
Gentle Christian Response
Christianity agrees that God exceeds human language and that humility is necessary. God is not an object we can define exhaustively. But Christianity also says God speaks truly about himself. Deuteronomy 29:29 says secret things belong to God, but revealed things belong to us. If God reveals himself, we can know truly without knowing exhaustively. Would true knowledge of God be possible if it comes from God's self-disclosure rather than human definition?
Typical Answer 2
A Hindu might say scripture and sages provide reliable pointers to Brahman. Their words are not exhaustive descriptions but guides toward realization.
Gentle Christian Response
Guides may help, but they still need to be tested. If Brahman is beyond all categories, then even claims from sages require some confidence that their words truly point in the right direction. Christianity grounds confidence in God's initiative: the Word became flesh (John 1:14). God does not merely give pointers; he comes personally in Christ. That gives clearer knowledge than human ascent. What makes one sage's pointer more reliable than another's?
Typical Answer 3
A Hindu might say Brahman can be directly realized, even if not adequately described. Experience surpasses language.
Gentle Christian Response
Experience can surpass language, but experience still needs interpretation. People across religions have powerful experiences and interpret them differently. Christianity says the clearest revelation of God is not a private experience but Jesus Christ, witnessed in history and Scripture. John 1:18 says the Son has made God known. That does not remove mystery, but it gives a trustworthy center. If experiences conflict, should they be judged by a clearer revelation from God?
