11.7 How can a seeker distinguish divine revelation from human religious imagination?

Typical Answer 1

A Hindu might say revelation can be recognized by spiritual fruit: peace, compassion, detachment, wisdom, and moral transformation.

Gentle Christian Response

Fruit is an important test. Jesus warns that false prophets are known by their fruits (Matthew 7:15-20). But fruit must be joined to truth. A teaching may produce some peaceful feelings while still misrepresenting God. Christianity says divine revelation is tested by God's own action in Christ, especially the resurrection (Acts 17:31). Should revelation be tested only by what it produces inwardly, or also by whether it corresponds to what God has done outwardly?

Typical Answer 2

A Hindu might say revelation is confirmed by lineage and tradition. Teachings preserved by sages and communities over centuries carry credibility.

Gentle Christian Response

Continuity can give credibility, but age and lineage do not guarantee truth. Ancient traditions disagree with one another, so antiquity cannot settle the matter by itself. Christianity values apostolic continuity because it is tied to eyewitness testimony about Jesus (Luke 1:1-4; 1 John 1:1-3). The issue is not merely whether a teaching is old, but whether it is true. What would make an ancient tradition open to correction?

Typical Answer 3

A Hindu might say direct spiritual experience distinguishes revelation from imagination. The seeker knows through realization, not merely argument.

Gentle Christian Response

Direct experience can feel compelling, but experiences can be misread. The Bible repeatedly warns that not every spiritual experience comes from God (1 John 4:1). Christianity therefore values public revelation, fulfilled promise, moral truth, and the person of Christ. Jesus' resurrection is not merely an inward realization but a public event proclaimed by witnesses (1 Corinthians 15:3-8). If private experience and public revelation conflict, which should correct the other?
